Should you buy the Sony 100-400mm GM lens for surf photography?
Hi, thanks for the videos : ) Whilst I save up for a 'good' camera, would you recommend starting off with something like the kodak pixpro wpz2 ? I really am a total beginner to photography but a keen surfer and insturctor.
I had a quick look at the Kodak Pixpro WPZ2 and it doesn't look like a great option for surf photography. I'd go for a GoPro, or maybe a decent waterproof case for your phone, instead
@@Learningsurfphotography1 thank you very much for the advice, i'll go for the phone case.
This honestly was SUCH a useful video and answered a ton of questions I had about lens/ dome pairings - really helpful as most educational content is from the housing manufacturers and targeted at people trying to make a gear list for shooting aquatic life and doesn't cover as broad a range of reasons why you'd need each setup as this video did. Thanks again, looking forward to watching your other videos 👍
Thank you for this I did notice this yesterday my iso was at 6400and it was great images
What is the best settings for " barrel photography" ?
Shutter speed at 1/1000 of a second or faster, as narrow an aperture as you can, f8 or narrower (higher number), if you want everything in focus.
nice example
Hi can you tell me about lenses
very informative thank you!!
You educated me. The A6000 and the lenses. Thanks mate.
After 4 years and still not a firmware update for this lens?
I've never checked the firmware status, so I can't tell you if there's a new version. I'm not sure what a firmware update would offer? Would it be something to do with more recent camera bodies? Mine still works great if that helps.
At the end of the day would you prefer the full frame lens over the Sony E 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G OSS apsc lens for surf photos ? Thanks for the video
The 70-350mm is my favourite lens for apsc cameras and surf photography
@@Learningsurfphotography1 Ok thanks . Do you use the full frame combo as well?
I've used lenses designed for full frame in apsc cameras, but I don't have a full frame camera
I think it'd be handy to start the next video with a few examples so the viewer knows what they're getting into!
Have learned a lot from your older videos. Crazy to see so many drop today, thanks for sharing!
This is a great course and Ben is an awesome experienced teacher
Hard to find these reasonable reviews. If you search reviews the only answer for what you should purchase is a $2000 lens...
Now in 2023, do you think this lens is still worth it on a Sony APSC with the MC11 or would you do it differently? thanks
It's definitely a good option if you need the 600mm, but personally I use the Sony 70-350mm as I don't need the extra reach
Hi, great video, thanks, one question: Do you know if possible to use red filter with the housing? (i guess should be internal one attached to the lens), is possible or will affect the focus or other, thanks in advance
I don't use one myself, and the standard port doesn't have a thread for an external "wet" filter, but I'm sure you could add one to whatever lens you're using. I don't think it would affect focusing on anything else, but it's worth checking with your lens manufacturer to check.
Hi, I recently bought the converter (I already had the 70-350) and it doesn't focus very well, how do you use it specifically?
I didn't have any issues with focussing. Try changing the settings, if it focuses in manual focus mode you know it's not the converter, if it doesn't, then you might have an issue with the converter
@@Learningsurfphotography1 I had to sell the converter. It didn't seem good to me for the 70-350 lens. I wasted time and money.
Great info, just bought the lens and used it for bird photos yesterday. Do you have the link to the extra piece you screwed on in the beginning? (converter?)
It's called the Olympus TCON 17X , but it's no longer being made, so it might be hard to find one, used ones pop up on Amazon from time to time: amzn.to/3PDi6YX I'd also check eBay or similar sites.
@@Learningsurfphotography1 Thanks does that screw directly on or do you need an adapter? Appreciate it
@@fishnmusicn you need an adapter, a step down ring to go from the end of the lens to the back of the teleconverter, I found one on eBay.
@@Learningsurfphotography1 thanks for the info, will check out your other videos :)
Hi Would you recommend today tcon 17x with 70-350? I already have the 70-350 lens I'm thinking of buying the teleconverter
I wouldn't bother with the adapter unless you really need the extra reach for video, where cropping isn't possible.
the vignette thing you mentioned made me think twice about my plan. how big is it?
@@richardjulianperezperez362 I can't remember to be honest, it will be smallest when zoomed in furthest, which is the only time you need the converter, but I'd still only use the teleconverter if you absolutely need the extra reach. And if you're shooting professional video, consider a 150-600mm or similar lens, I've got a review of the sigma version on my channel.
I recently bought a new 100-400 GM and when mounted on my A7IV and A7RV there is a slight rotational wobble (clockwise-counterclockwise) which I never experienced in another lens. Also tried it on my good old A7III and on that it does not wobble. I notice the wobble when holding the lens and the body handheld and rotating the zoom ring (smoothest setting) Anyone else noticed this? Is it normal?
I didn't experience anything like that when I used the lens. I'd get in touch with the seller you purchased it from and see what they say.
nice photos bro!
you make vids anymore?
Not for a long time. I might do some more if inspiration strikes.
I have a fuji xT3 and i'm considering buying a canon objectif 70-300mm cause i think it might be enough. do you have some recomendations?
Sorry, I don't know much about Canon or Fuji lens options
I'm using a Sony RX100 200 mm at the moment. It gives good quality, but even if I'm in ancle deep water, I have to crop a lot, which gives me less quality at A4 print size. I'm disabled and can only use my left hand, so I enjoy the compact camera size. I noticed the Panasonic TZ200 has a one inch sensor with a zoom lens. Do you think that the 360mm will do the trick, or will I still have to crop and loose quality on a A4 or larger print? Fantastic videos.
I think the Panasonic would give you more options for sure. It might be worth seeing if you can try one out in a local shop. I expect the ergonomics would have just as big an impact as the zoom on whether you'd prefer it over the Sony or not.
@@Learningsurfphotography1 it is more to do with how much I need to crop the image and weather I can print the images above A4 size without loosing quality. The other option is a Sony RX10 mkiv with 600mm zoom on a tripod. insha'Allah I will also get either an Olympus TG-6 or a Seafrogs UW housing and pistol grip for the RX100
@@jamesnewton1196 I'm not too familiar with the different options you've outlined, but if you want the best image quality go for the biggest sensor and longest zoom you can get. I'm not sure where you are, but the Sony RX10 mkIV is about £1500 new or £1000 second hand in the UK. For that price you can get a used a6500 and a used Sony 70-350mm for 525mm equivalent focal length with a bigger sensor and higher resolution. That's what I use for shooting surfing from the beach and I'm very happy with the results. I'm sure the RX10 would work well too, just make sure you're getting more optical zoom and not going for a smaller sensor and you should see an improvement over the RX100.
4:55 Yes! Ignore anyone who says anything about it being unbalanced. Half the time you're going to be shooting at least from a monopod so balance doesn't even enter into it.
Good vídeo. But I was waiting the same example of photography. ☺️
Liquideye or sea salt?
It depends. If you have the budget for the liquid eye, and it has all the ports you want, then it's a great choice. If you're on a budget and need the most flexibility (or if you're going to dive with it) then the Sea Frogs is a good option.
I love my Hydro Tech 2 fins. Most comfortable yet and have eliminated ulcers and rubbing due to being all silicone. I don't have to wear fin socks any more. Only problem is they don't float if they come off...
Does it fit the sony zve10?
No, it only fits the Sony a6xxx series
What you describe (settings for shooting a session) from 5:40-6:20 is very interesting. Setting to 1m rather than infinity, using shutter priority etc. It would be great to learn more about the different focal lengths you commit to for different scenarios/types of waves. I am currently shooting a6000/seafrogs housing and a Rokinon 12mm. I usually go infinity and dive in, but some of the closer action isn't very sharp. I am looking forward to trying the 1m setting you describe here.
When shooting with a fisheye (much more so than rectilinear wide angle lenses like the 12mm), if the action is happening more than a metre or so away from the lens, it's not going to fill the frame. You need to be right up close to the surfer or wave to get the shot with a fisheye. Combined with the massive depth of field when shooting at a reasonable aperture (f8 or narrower ideally), then 1m is the best option for above water fisheye shots. With a manual aperture and focus lens, shooting with auto ISO and shutter priority makes the most sense. I've got a course which has lots more on shooting with different focal lengths and settings I like to use etc.: learningsurfphotography.thinkific.com/
Where do you get de olimpus teleconvert ? Do you have some link to find?
They're hard to find these days. I'd search on eBay, or similar sites in your region. Amazon occasionally have some in stock too
Really good informative video and straight to the point. I am trying to decide which lens for my a6500 camera, and I shoot mainly watersports like surfing, windsurfing and foiling it sounds like you really like the 70-350 lens.....liked and subscribed, cheers!
Please provide a link for the dock. I have the a6000 and same lens and converter as you but not sure which dock I need since there are different options
If you've got the Canon EF mount lens like in this video, you need the Canon EF mount dock: amzn.to/3j40TGR They make a different version for each lens mount.
You are using the lens convertor because you have the Canon mount version of the lens oris it that Sigma not have an E-mount version of this lens ?
As far as I know this lens isn't available in Sony e-mount, so the best option is to use the Canon version with the Sigma adapter. They do offer the bigger, more expensive sports version of the 150-600mm in the sony e mount. Since this video I've bought the Sony 70-350mm which has been great
Ben! Love your videos man - always super helpful. I shoot with an a6000 and the C6000 II housing. One of the issues I continually have is my pistol trigger gets stuck during & after my sessions. I’ve hosed the inside of the trigger down thoroughly after a session, soaked it in warm water to try and get sand, etc out but can’t seem to fix this. Obviously the issue is that because it doesn’t release, I take more photos in a burst sequence than wanted which ends up draining my battery and requires more work to get rid of non-keeper photos in post processing. Have you ever experienced this and if so, any hacks on how to fix it?
Hi Mark, I haven't had this issue myself, but I rarely shoot in waves with the type of sand that will get stuck in the trigger. The way I've removed sand form other housings in the past is to move them slowly side to side in a bucket of fresh water. That seems to work for me if something's jammed. I'm not sure what else you can do if you're shooting at a really sandy break.
Hello people! Someone knows how to avoid the raindrops in your dome? Yesterday I have tried by first time and the photos are full of raindrops. Thanks!
There's a couple of ways to do it, here's a full guide: www.learningsurfphotography.com/prevent-water-drops-wet-port-vs-dry-port/
I just purchased the Sony 70-350mm for $677 like new condition, should arrive early next week. I’m soooo excited for it! 😊
Budget wise, a good 70-350mm lens for under 1k, is a bargain! Factor in the compact size, and it's a no brainer. It is a slow lens and the fs varies, which is why it's not more expensive, but all things considered, silly good for the $... Personally, it makes no sense to me to put FS lenses on a compact APC body negating the entire benefit of the compact APC body.
Hi, thanks for the great review! Does the plastic grip have the focus shutter button ? Where you first push to focus then to actually shot? Thanks in advance
Yes it does, it will focus, then release the trigger.
@@Learningsurfphotography1 perfect! Thank you George. Im officially a new sub 🤙🏼
Does it take photosection? Like keeping the picture botton pressed and taking multiple pictures from one click press
I'm not sure what you mean by "photosection". The housing just prevents the camera getting wet, it doesn't do anything that the camera can't already do. You can use any of the features of the camera when it's in the housing, so if you set it up in continuous shooting mode, then hold the shutter button down, it will keep shooting photos, if that's what you mean. If you're using an RX100 model which can install apps (I think the Mark V was the last one) then you might be able to get hold of the Sony Timelapse app (if it's still available), which might do what you want, but I'm not sure.
What i mean is if it takes burst only in 24fps
@@joseaparicio178 this housing is compatible with lots of different versions of the RX100 series, you need to check if the one you're interested in does what you want it to. Have a look at the Sony website, or search for the camera you're going to use to see if it will do what you need.
How is the quality when it comes to video?
The quality is excellent for stills and video. Although, at video resolution, even 4K, I think you're less likely to notice the difference in quality between the 100-400 and a less expensive lens, so it might be worth looking at alternatives that are better for your priorities if you're on a budget
This housing gen 1 can i fit sony a6000. A6500. A6400?
I'm pretty sure it can fit those. The latest Gen 3 version certainly can. I'd email Sea Frogs directly to make sure if it's really important that it fits all three of those camera bodies.
Thanks for the review, can you test the new tamron 18-300 mm ? And what is the zoom len that we can use with a full frame a7iii? Thanks
At the moment I'm not too interested in the Tamron 18-300mm. It's very similar in size and weight to this lens, but I'd rather have the extra 50mm at the long end than at the wide end. I've also tried the Sony 18-200mm, and it wasn't as useful as I thought it would be. For surf photography I'm generally either shooting with a long lens, or a wide angle, so having both in one isn't super useful. I don't know about full frame zoom lenses, I only shoot with aps-c bodies, so I concentrate on lenses designed for them. I'm sure there are a few options out there for the A7III.
I waited a lot of months for a used unit. Finally got this lens for around usd650. Really happy with the purchase. I tend to close down the aperture to f8 at 350mm (It’s ever slightly soft wide open) I’ve set the button on the lens for high shutter speed (I don’t shoot action often), and sometimes use clear image zoom for extra reach. From my testing, this can result in better definition compared to just cropping very aggresively in post.
That's a great price, and thanks for the tips. I'll have to try out clear image zoom, I've always assumed that cropping in post would be better, but interested to compare the two based on your feedback
Fantastic! Finally got good advice on stepping up my reach. I have just bought ( 6 months ago) an A6000 with an 18-105 lens. Am loving but desperately looking for more reach. Are you aware of any gadgets (budget) that could boost the 18-105 G lens?(the £419 one lol). Or would I need to get the kit 210 zoom and then add Olympus gadget on end? Sooo grateful for these videos!
I'm pretty sure the 18-105mm's filter thread is too big to accept something like the TCON 17X unfortunately. It's a great lens in the right place though, I shot in the water with it a bit. I expect the kit 55-210mm is the best option, even that on its own might be enough, and there are lots of them around second hand for good prices.
Hi I currently have a 210 telephoto kit lens with the Olympus 1.7x tcon attached to it and i mainly use it for surf videos. I wanna upgrade my video quality and reach. What do you think about the new sigma 150-600 vs the Sony apsc 70-350 lens with the olympus tcon 1.7x . Essentialy they will both have.a reach around 900mm so I’m waying out if it’s worth buying the sigma that would cost around $1500 or jus buying a second hand 70-350 for $750 second hand
If you're not shooting with a 4K capable camera body, I'd think about getting one of them first, as that'll make a difference to video quality. If you're already shooting 4K, I think either option will offer similar video quality at full zoom. You'll have more versatility with the 70-350 _ converter, as you can shoot at 70mm if you're close. It's also much smaller and lighter, which is a big benefit if you shoot somewhere that's not close to a car park. I'd go for the 70-350mm personally. The only reason to get the Sigma would be if you're being paid by someone to shoot the video and they care as much about how professional you look on the beach as the quality of the video. In that case, the Sigma is going to make you look like more of a pro videographer. By the time the video is edited, graded, encoded for UA-cam etc. I doubt you could tell the difference between the quality with either set up.
I’m on the fence between getting pod 2s or churchills.
Great summary. Good you covered prime cons with surf
GOOOD VID LIKE USUAL, KEEP EM COMING
Is there a video on how to put lights in this salted line case?
What type of lights do you want to put in the housing? There are dive style lights which mount to the outside of the housing and connect with a fibre-optic cable so they can be triggered by the pop up flash, is that what you're interested in?
